I am so happy to stay at Madaba. The city is full of churches, mosaics, old houses, new hotels, cats, shops….

After five hard working days at the site we had a chance to walk around Madaba. The St George Church is so beautiful, but also very famous for the map that was found on its floor. Map made of little pieces of tesserae is the oldest map of the Holy Land.

There is a huge archaeological park near the church of St. Mary. The church itself has a long history, over many centuries of rebuilding and remaking of mosaics. Outside the church one can enjoy walking on the Roman road. The park includes a modern school where people are still learning how to make mosaics. The centuries old tradition is still active in Madaba.

The best part of the city is also the oldest and the highest point in the city. Church of Saint John the baptist is full of surprises. Next to the church one can enjoy some history in the museum. Beautiful old black and white photos of old Madaba are a remainder of its origins and its founding families. Under the church there are beautiful chapels, remains of some excavation and remains of mosaics (of course). But the best part of the church is the tower. After 100 steps (stone /metal stairs) there is a small platform and the view.

More then history, this city offers friendship. Some of the locals have small shops and they are always ready to share a cup of tea with you. Getting to know them you get to know the true Madaba.
