Red Rose City

My last visit to Petra was over a decade ago. I wasn’t sure if this year I will finally get a chance to see her again, but luck was on our side. As soon as we had a day off the dig we decided to take a field trip to the south of Jordan. It not easy after five days of hard working to skip the so well deserved day of rest, but most of our group was enthusiastic to visit the famous Red Rose City or the Rock, Sela, Rqm or how we call it now – Petra.

the “new” entrance to the Petra archaeological park with a modern museum and a large Visitor centre with shops was a surprise for me
the entrance to the Siq
Khazneh al Firaun or the Treasury – according to the widespread legend the Pharaoh’s treasure was hidden here
enjoy the morning shade it will be the last of the day
the Theater cut into the hillside
the main Colonnaded Street in the centre of Petra
Ad Deir or The Monastery is a monumental building that has probably served in a cultic or religious activities
it is strange to see more donkeys than tourists in Petra but at least donkeys are loving their slow and relaxing season
the view of the Rift valley
before leaving Petra you always try to absorb the colours of the sandstone realizing you have witnessed the miracle of mother nature with just a glimpse of what ancient civilizations have built to enhance and glorify the beauty that was already present here in the Red Rose City
